Gertrude E. Schroeder is professor of economics at the University of Virginia. She teaches courses on comparative economic systems and on the economies of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and has published The System Vs. Progress: Soviet Economic Problems (London: Centre for Research into Communist Economies, 1986) and several articles on the Soviet economy, focusing on economic reforms, labor, and living standards.
