Peter H. Smith is the author of Labyrinths of Power: Political Recruitment in Twentieth-Century Mexico (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1979), among other works, and coauthor of Modern Latin America (New York: Oxford University Press, 1984). He is past president of the Latin American Studies Association and is currently codirector of the Bilateral Commission on the Future of United States–Mexican Relations, an independent study group.
