William A. Joseph teaches Chinese politics, political development, and comparative communism at Wellesley College and is an associate in research at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University. He is the author of The Critique of Ultra-Leftism in China, 1958-1981 (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1984).
