Michael F. Lofchie is a professor of political science at the University of California at Los Angeles. His most recent publication, coedited with Stephen Commins and Rhys Payne, is Africa’s Agrarian Crisis: The Roots of Famine (Boulder, Colo.: Lynne Rienner Publishers, 1986). He is currently completing a book on agricultural development in Kenya and Tanzania.
