John A. Marcum is the author of The Angolan Revolution, Vol. 1, The Anatomy of an Explosion, 1950–1962 and Vol. 2, Exile Politics and Guerrilla Warfare, 1962–1976 (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1969 and 1978). His other major works include Education, Race, and Social Change in South Africa (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1982). Marcum, a former president of the African Studies Association, served as academic vice chancellor of the University of California at Santa Cruz from 1979 to 1984. During his 1984—1985 sabbatical year, which he devoted to an intensive examination of southern African issues, he visited Angola, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Portugal and the Soviet Union.
