John F. Copper is Stanley J . Buckman Professor of International Studies at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the author of five books on Asian affairs, including Taiwan’s Elections: Political Development and Democratization in the Republic of China (Baltimore: University of Maryland School of Law, 1984). He has lived in Asia for more than 13 years, including five years in Taiwan.
