J. Gus Liebenow is former vice president of Indiana University. He is the author of many scholarly works, including Liberia: The Evolution of Privilege (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1969), Liebenow is past president of the African Studies Association, a member of the Executive Council of the International African Institute (London), and founding director of the African Studies Program at Indiana University.
