Chu-yuan Cheng, chairman of the Asian Studies Committee at Ball State University, was formerly senior research economist at the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. His major publications include: China’s Petroleum Industry: Output Growth and Export Potential (New York: Praeger, 1976); The Machine-Building Industry in Communist China (Hawthorne, N.Y.: Aldine-Atherton, 1971); Scientific and Engineering Manpower in Communist China (Washington, D.C.: National Science Foundation, 1966) and many other articles and books on the Chinese economy. His forthcoming book, The Economic Development of China: Growth and Structure Change, is to be published by Westview Press in 1980.
