Barbara A. Alpert served in the Peace Corps in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where she taught English and history at a private high school. She also worked for the Ethiopian National Literacy Campaign and studied Amharic, the national language. Upon her return to the United States, she joined the editorial staff of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
