General Lewis B. Hershey was commissioned in the regular Army as an artillery officer in 1920. His connection with Selective Service began in 1936 when he became secretary and executive officer of the Army and Navy Selective Service Committee, a planning group. He was named Director of the Selective Service System in July, 1941—a post he still holds today.
