Joseph A. Moran, former actor and head of the radio commercial department of Young and Rubicam, advertising agency, is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Johns Hopkins University. He spent ten years in musical comedies, vaudeville and stock as “leading man.” One day Mr Moran entered a last line in a local radio limerick contest and won a watch. He then sent in another entry and promptly won his second watch. The contest ran eight weeks and Mr. Moran owned six watches. From then on he looked for contests and won seventy-two in a row. The second year he did even better, winning about $15,000 in cash and merchandise.
The New Yorker ran an article about this feat, and it was read by Chester J. LaRoche, President of Young and Rubicam, who in 1934 offered Mr. Moran the job of writing radio commercials, which he promptly accepted. He has just been made a stockholder in Young and Rubicam.
Mr. Moran is married to Thelma Ritter, former stage actress now in radio, and has two children, a boy and a girl.
