Ardath W. Burks, a Navy language-intelligence officer in the Pacific Theatre during World War II,servedas Acting Field Director at the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies in Okayama, Japan in 1952–1953. In 1958–1959, he was a Fulbright Research Professor at Kyoto University and, during the summer of 1962, he went back to East Asia to survey the development of urban studies in Japan. He is the author of The Government of Japan (New York: Crowell, 2d. rev. ed.,1964), and Far Eastern Governments and Politics (Princeton: Van Nostrand, Inc.,1956).
