*The author of this article, a teacher of European history at Radcliffe College, is now completing an exhaustive study of the origins of Italian colonialism, based largely on his researches in Italy, where he was the Bayard Cutting Traveling Fellow of Harvard University for 1931-1932. While abroad he also visited Tunisia and Libya.
