Julian Towster visited the Soviet Union in 1935 and again in the summer of 1957, when he spent some time also in Poland and Czechoslovakia. During World War II, he served as a political analyst with the Department of Justice, the Office of Strategic Seivices and the Department of State. Later Professor Towster became Chief of the Foreign Political Section of the East European branch in the Office of Research and Intelligence, Department of State. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1947 to 1949. He is author of Political Power in the U.S.S.R. and co-author of European Political Systems.
