Henry Peyreis Sterling Professor of French at Yale University in addition to his duties as Chairman of the Department and Director of Graduate Studies in French. He is the author of many articles and lectures and of 14 books, including Men and Works of the Twentieth Century, and The Contemporary French Novel. The French government recognized his distinguished career by conferring on him, in 1955, the rank of Officer in the French Legion of Honor. In 1957 both Bard College and Rutgers University awarded him honorary Litt. D. degrees. He has served as a member of the selection committee of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation since 1950, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Council of Learned Societies from 1952 to 1956; he has also been elected to membership in the Philosophical Society.
