Robert F. Byrnes served in Military Intelligence during World War II and has taught French and Russian history at Swarthmore College, Rutgers University and at Indiana. He was director of the Mid-European Study Center from 1954-1956. Author of Anti Semitism in Modern France: The Prologue to the Dreyfus Affair (1950) and of numerous studies on Russian and French history, he is also general editor of a seven-volume series, East-Central Europe under the Communists.
