Howard A. Reedspeaks fluent Greek and Turkish, has spent years in the Near East, and sewed with the Navy there during the war. A Yale graduate, he studied Islamic and Ottoman history at Princeton and in the field on Rockefeller and later Ford Foundation fellowships. He was assistant director of the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University, from 1952 to 1955 and has published articles on Islam and the modern Near East in several books and journals. This paper represents his own views and the Ford Foundation is in no way responsible for this article.
