Wilfred Cantwell Smithlived for some years in Lahore, now Pakistan, studying and teaching Islamic and Indian history. He has travelled extensively through Muslim India and parts of the Near East, and has visited almost all the major areas of the Muslim world. He is now Professor of Comparative Religion, McGill University, Montreal. He is the author of numerous articles on contemporary Muslim developments, of the book Modern Islam in India—A Social Analysis, and of a forthcoming study Islam in Modern History to be published by Princeton University Press later this year. The introductory paragraphs of “Islam in the Modem World” draw on material first published by Dr. Smith in the Church of England in Canada brochure, One Family.
