FRED A. SHANNON is the author of several historical books, including The Organization and Administration of the Union Army (2 vols.). The Farmer’s Last Frontier was published in 1945 and a third edition of America’s Economic Growth appeared in 1951. He has been awarded both a Justin Windsor Prize and a Pulitzer Prize.
