JAMES A. BARNES, who received his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, has taught at Wisconsin, South Dakota, Kentucky, Texas, North Carolina and the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a member of the Temple University faculty since 1930. In the early 1930’s, he was a fellow with the Social Science Research Council; for more than a year he was a fellow with the Brookings Institution in Washington. Among his books are John G. Carlisle: Financial Statesman and Wealth of the American People: A History of Their Economic Life.
