EDWARD GONZALEZ is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of California, Los Angeles, and a Rand consultant. Beginning with research on his dissertation in the mid-1960s, he has specialized on Cuba's domestic and foreign affairs; he made field trips to the island in 1967 and 1968. Professor Gonzalez is the author of Cuba Under Castro: The Limits of Charisma (1974), Post-Revolutionary Cuba in a Changing World (1975) with David Ronfeldt, and “Castro and Cuba's New Orthodoxy” in Problems of Communism (January-February 1976), as well as other articles on various aspects of the Castro regime in World Politics, Problems of Communism, Studies in Comparative Communism, and Foreign Aflairs.
