MARK G. FIELD is Professor of Sociology at Boston University, Associate of the Russian Research Center at Harvard University, Lecturer at Harvard's Medical School and School of Public Health, and Assistant Sociologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has made several trips to the U.S.S.R. and Eastern Europe. Professor Field is the author of many articles in the professional literature on Soviet society, medicine, social problems, and related subjects, as well as Doctor and Patient in Soviet Russia (1957, an out-growth of his doctoral dissertation at Harvard) and Soviet Socialized Medicine: An Introduction (1967). He has recently completed editing a book on The Social Consequences o/ Modernization in Communist Countries to be published by the Johns Hopkins University Press.
