SIDNEY MONAS is Professor of History and Slavic Languages at the University of Texas, Austin. His publications include The Thrird Section: Police and Society in Russia Under Nicholas I (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1961) and editions of the works of Dostoyevsky, Osip Mandel'shtam, Nikolai Gumilev, and Mikhail Zoshchenko. He is currently writing a history of censorship.
