LAWRENCE N. LANCER is Associate Professor of History at the University of Connecticut. He earned his Ph.D. in Russian History at the University of Chicago and received a Fulbright–Hays Fellowship to do his doctoral research at Moscow University in 1968–69. His recent articles have appeared in the Slavic Review, Russian History, and Canadian-American Slavic Studies. He is currently completing a study of Russian towns in the Mongol era.
