YIRI VALENTA is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Soviet and East
European Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He holds degrees from the Prague School of Economies and from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. A former research fellow at the Brookings Institution, he is the author of the forthcoming Anatomy of a Decision: Soviet Intervention in Czechoslovakia, as well as articles on Soviet and East Euxopean affairs in this journal, Problems of Communism, and several compendia. Professor Valenta is currently working on two book-length studies: the Soviet and Cuban involvement in Africa and Eurocommuaism.
