Origins of the Difference in Political Influence of the Soviet and Chinese Armies: The Officer Corps in the Civil Wars*

JONATHAN R. ADELMAN is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Alabama. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1976, and was a Charles Phelps Taft Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Cincinnati. The present article is taken from his doctoral dissertation, “The Revolutionary Armies: A Comparison of the Russian and Chinese Communist Armies.” Professor Adelman is currently doing research on the Russian Civil War.
