Robert W. Cherny is professor emeritus of history at San Francisco State University. His work on California history includes San Francisco, 1865–1932: Politics, Power, and Urban Development (1986, with coauthor William Issel), Competing Visions: A History of California (2nd ed., 2013, with coauthors Richard Griswold del Castillo and Gretchen Lemke-Santangelo), California Women and Politics (2011, with coeditors Mary Ann Irwin and Ann Marie Wilson), Victor Arnautoff and the Politics of Art (2017), more than twenty published essays, and a forthcoming biography of Harry Bridges.
