Welcome to a special issue celebrating fifty years of publication, in which we look back at where Afterimage has been and bring that lens forward to the present.
I begin with appreciation. In our fifty years of publication there have been scores of people who have worked diligently to conceive of content, work with contributors, and get issues published and in readers’ hands on time—and always within a limited budget. Fulfilling myriad editing, research, layout, subscription, and promotional roles were staff, graduate assistants, interns, and volunteers—too many to list here individually. Their efforts have kept this publication afloat over decades of diminishing resources and audiences for print journalism (a format we were able to maintain until 2018). Many have continued on to prominent positions in galleries, at publications, and in academia—as well as to publish groundbreaking works in the field.
