In the Spring of 2020, as an antidote to doomscrolling and reading every PubMed article about COVID-19 that I could find, I took my seventeen-year-old daughter’s suggestion to stop terrorizing myself with statistics and watch fashion videos on YouTube instead. I started with Alexa Chung’s Franglais series (2019–20), and although none of her advice applied to my coronavirus wardrobe of old hoodies and pajama bottoms, I persevered, recognizing that out of all the circulating internet fantasies I could inhabit in a post-truth world, these were probably the most benign. Within a few weeks, the algorithm had incorporated Vogue magazine’s 73 Questions into my suggested video feed.
