This month's BioMystery is certainly some sort of embryo (about 15 cms in length), but the question is from which animal? For those of you who cling to any part of “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny,” you will not be well served by thinking along those lines. Knowing that the scientific name of this creature, in part, is the ancient Greek word for “wing” (ptera) will also not be very useful. Any guesses? See page 274 at the back of this issue for the answer.
