Holiday Gift Guide For Younger Readers

This graphic novel retelling of a famous scientist’s early life, written and illustrated by a professor of biology, is my favorite science book I read in 2023. It is aimed at young people, but it will delight anyone into graphic novels and/or science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Santiago! is a magnificent love letter to science, art, the power of creativity, and the fabulous fun of problem-solving. It is also a loving homage to Calvin and Hobbes. If you’re a Bill Watterson fan like I am, you’ll delight in the many subtle references to the adventures of a certain six-year-old and his stuffed tiger, but these “Easter eggs” won’t detract from the book for those unfamiliar with Calvin, who definitely shares young Ramón y Cajal’s chaotic and delightful energy.
