In November 2022, education was transformed with the launch of ChatGPT 3.0. ChatGPT and other similar artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) enable content to be produced in seconds that before would have taken hours to days. Some users have the impression that AI can think critically. However, current LLMs only choose predictive text based on probabilities to answer a prompt. This is much like asking Google Docs to suggest the next word. LLMs are much more powerful but cannot yet “think.” By scanning the web for predictions, LLMs often produce answers with inconsistent accuracy.

Some in education have hailed the advent of this technology as positively transformative (often ignoring the weaknesses of AI).
