Science denial once seemed like a fringe set of beliefs held by those who thought the earth was flat and resisted all evidence to the contrary. Now, however, science denial has become a threat to lives, communities, and the health of the planet. The United States, a nation with vast resources and scientific expertise, has had hundreds of thousands of unnecessary deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic and a greater percentage of deaths per capita than any other country. Individuals have refused vaccinations and other protective measures, sometimes resisting scientific authority as a badge of their tribal identity and sometimes because they were simply overwhelmed by what they find posted online and lack the skills to effectively evaluate it.
