Nearly five years ago, in early December 2015, Michele Salzman, Susanna Elm, Emily Albu, and I met with David Famiano, the Journals Publisher at UC Press. My University of California colleagues and I floated the idea that our field needed a forum that would reflect and contribute to the diversity and global nature of contemporary scholarship on Late Antiquity. Over the next year, that vision—through the hard work of lots of people and always with David’s unflagging support—became this journal, Studies in Late Antiquity.

The present moment, five years into this undertaking, as we publish the last issue of our fourth volume, is an especially appropriate time to reflect on the journal’s goals and future. With so many things in flux in our lives—our health, our politics, our economy, our environment—we are more convinced than ever that the ambitions that this journal set for itself represent important avenues to add...
